On Sunday 14 May, Beacon HC U14 Boys entered a friendly tournament hosted by Lichfield HC.
In 19°C sunshine, we finished third out of six teams, playing five games and winning our first three. Our 8 goals included a triple in the first game from top-scorer Matthew, who netted 4 in total. Also on the scoresheet were Harshaan, Seb, Ted and Leo.
The draw handed us harder opposition with each match. We ended the tournament with defeats to Tier2 powerhouses Lichfield and Sutton, who overwhelmed us with their movement and passing before placing first and second respectively. Our hat-trick of wins against the other teams was enough to earn us third spot (despite the organisers mistakenly awarding us second-place medals after miscalculating the stats).
Arguably the best result was a 2-1 victory over a physically big and skilful Newport side, following some equally special goals. The opener was a solo strike from Leo, who dribbled straight through the field from defence. By contrast our second goal was a fantastic team effort that involved the team’s two youngest players, Harshaan and Ted. Great wing-play from Harshaan led to a cross from the right that was tapped in at the far post by Ted, following his late run from left wing.
The superb performances of the two U13 players were mirrored by the rest of the team. SamWS was tidy and composed in defence, centre-mid and on the wing, despite feeling under the weather. SamMS’s saves, kicked clearances and defensive marshalling kept us in the running, Leo was tenacious at the back and strong charging through the centre, Tristan provided trickery in midfield, Seb harried and harassed up and down the left, and Matthew was an excellent outlet and target.
Well done to the boys, their parents for bringing them, and to the hosts Lichfield for organising the event.
