On Sunday 13th October, Beacon HC hosted the season's first Tier3 7-a-side League event at Aston Uni Recreation Centre, which also featured teams from Bloxwich, Cannock, Stone, Sutton and Wolverhampton&Tettenhall (WaTs) clubs.
The monthly competition is open to Mixed, Boys or Girls teams made up of players up to and including school year 9. Being at "Tier3" level, the aim is less about finishing top of the table, and more about giving newly formed teams and less experienced players an enjoyable taste of competitive hockey on a smaller pitch.
This first meeting revealed a big mix of abilities and the organisers will adopt measures to better manage this at future events, the aim being to ensure that the players in all teams enjoy the events and have a greater chance of success.
Beacon performed well, finishing third with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss to Stone, a nearly all-Girls team who were the tournament's revelation with 4 wins and only 1 loss.
Big thanks to Mikaela and Richard for helping to manage the team, take photos, and look after the equipment, and to U17 player Tom for volunteering to umpire.
It was also great to see Bloxwich giving an opportunity to another young umpire, who did an equally sterling job.
Girls invited to join the team!
We would like girls to join the team, so that it's Mixed rather than all-Boys. Most of the other teams are Mixed too. All abilities are welcomed up to and including year 9.
